Industrial Commercial Real Estate in Chicago
A bastion of industry throughout its history, Chicago transformed from a midwest trading hub to a manufacturing powerhouse during WW1. While the city suffered tremendous losses in the industrial sector during the Great Depression, the history and culture of manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, logistics, and shipping stays true in today’s modern Chicago.
Now home to a bustling central business area that hosts some of the largest names in international trade, finance, and commerce, most of the historic ports along the Chicago River that handled shipping and transportation capabilities have shifted to the South Side on Lake Calumet Harbor. Because of Chicago’s proximity to Lake Michigan, the city has continued to serve as a major shipping hub to transport goods and services to and from the Chicago area and the rest of the nation.
Throughout its history, Chicago processed and shipped steel, iron, copper, gold, and timber, distributing it to nearby Ohio for processing and distribution. Coca-Cola held its corporate headquarters and syrup manufacturing plant there in the early 20th century. Ford and major shipbuilders also operated in Chicago throughout the 20th century.
While the more dense neighborhoods in Chicago may prove difficult for larger-scale industrial uses, the South Side of Chicago is more suited for manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping due to its access to Lake Calumet Harbor, Interstates 94 and 90, and the Norfolk Southern Calumet Rail Yard.
